ELSIE DUNSTON MOORE

Posted on Aug 17, 2011 - 01:57 PM Printer Friendly View

Elsie Dunston Moore, 80, of Gloucester, died Aug. 13, 2011.

Elsie was born and raised in Gloucester County, and was a long-time member of Bellamy United Methodist Church. She married the love of her life, Russell, from Bellamy and they lived a short while in Yorktown as Russell worked as a firefighter at the Naval Weapons Station. They had their first child, Nancy, while living in Yorktown. They moved to Gloucester in the early ’50s to be close to his family of 13 siblings and her family in Ware Neck. Then their second child, Bill, was born. Elsie was blessed to be able to stay home and be a homemaker and take care of her children and husband. She was also blessed with having such wonderful in-laws, as the Moores. They thought of her as a sister and always included her in family outings and looked after her.

After Russell died in the early ’80s she was determined to get a job and get out the house. She worked at the Gazette-Journal for a number of years and loved the work and friends she made there. Elsie took care of her parents until their deaths in the ’90s.

Elsie’s dearest and best friend and confidant was Martha Hudgins, who stood by her until the end. She looked after Elsie, taking her shopping and to appointments. She also had a special relationship with her daughter-in-law, Tala, who was always looking after Elsie and was her shopping buddy.

Elsie enjoyed baking cakes and brownies to serve her family when they would come for holidays and meals at her home in Bellamy. She was a great cook. Elsie enjoyed traveling and traveled all over the country with her sister on bus trips and to visit her nephew Edward and his wife Mary Jane, whom she dearly loved. She loved animals, especially dogs and always had treats for her canine grandchildren, Maggie, Allie, Misty, Miley and cats, Boggie and Sassey.

Elsie was a strong person with an extraordinary will and determination. No matter what was happening she was always concerned about how others were. We will miss her so much and always remember her.

She is survived by daughter, Nancy Plummer and husband Michael; son, Bill Moore and wife Tala; grandchildren, Reesha Riley, Richard Miller; brother, Chandler Dunston; sister, Marian Alderman; great-grandchildren, newly born Brianna, Kayla, Angela and Steven; sisters-in-law, Jessie Horsley, Kittie Smith, Frances Cox, Elizabeth Walton, Ruby Jean Moore and Marion McRoy.

Funeral service conducted by the Rev. Kenneth S. Waclo will be heldat 11 a.m. Thursday at Bellamy United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family received friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.

In memory of our mother, contributions may be given to Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, Va. 23061 or the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
