ELIZABETH WINDER JAMES

Posted on Jan 23, 2013 - 12:41 PM Printer Friendly View

Elizabeth Winder James, 93, of Chesapeake, went to be with God on Jan. 16, 2013.

She was born in Norfolk, Va., on June 29, 1919 to the late Edmund Benson and Gladys Williams Winder.

Liz married Franklin James on July 11, 1941; they remained married until Frank’s death on March 25, 2012. Now they are together again. Besides Frank, she was predeceased by her siblings, Eloise Davidson and Tilden Winder.

Liz worked as a medical assistant and a dental assistant until her son was born. After taking a 14-year break, she worked as a ward clerk at Portsmouth Psychiatric Center. She retired in 1983. She was a longtime and very faithful member of the Westminster Class of the First Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth, Va. She was a member of both the Richard Dale Woman’s Club and the Christian Woman’s Club. She and Frank resided in the Portsmouth until their move to assisted living. Liz loved her family, friends, and church. She never met a stranger.

She is survived by her son, Jeff James of Suffolk, Va.; grandchildren, Mallory James, Jay James, Ryan Basham, and Ben James, and many nieces and nephews.

She was especially thrilled to have been able to attend her granddaughter Mallory’s college graduation in 2012.

The family appreciates the loving care of Dominion Village Assisted Living, Diane Espada, R.N., and the Comfort Care team at Maryview Medical Center.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 19, 2013, in the First Presbyterian Church, 515 Court Street, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Kerry Westerwick, followed by a reception. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth, handled arrangements.
