On Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, Catherine Eileen Newbill Johnston of Gloucester, recently of Hallieford, entered the Church Triumphant.

Born in Newport News, Va., on Jan. 18, 1933, she was the daughter of Stephen Curtis Newbill and Olympia Miller Newbill. Catherine was a 1951 graduate of Newport News High School where she was a noted Thespian and member of the National Honor Society. There she met her husband, James (Chuck) Albert Johnston, who survives her. They were wed in August of 1952, celebrating 60 years of marriage this year.

She is survived by one sister, Esteva Newbill Sawyer and her husband T. Paul Sawyer of Hampton; daughter, Theresa J. Larsen and husband James of Gloucester; daughter, Lisa. J. Machen and husband David of Mathews; son, James A. Johnston and wife Pamela of Toano; daughter, Holly J. Stallman and husband Thomas of Gloucester; son, Stephen A. Johnston of Gloucester, and daughter, Joy J. McCormick and husband Michael of Brewster, N.Y. Also celebrating her life are nine grandsons; two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Although employed at different times by NACA, Trinity Lutheran Day School, and Newport News Shipbuilding, Catherine pursued interests in writing, drama, music, reading, gardening, and church activities. She felt her main calling was as helpmate and partner of Chuck and mother of six. She lived a life of loving and creative service to her family and community.

A service for the celebration of Catherine’s life was held on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Apostles Lutheran Church, Gloucester. The Rev. James R. Larsen officiated.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Apostles Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 1010, Gloucester, Va.

Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point, handled the arrangements.
