BARBARA JULIA HAYNES RICHMOND

Posted on May 25, 2011 - 01:48 PM Printer Friendly View

The soul that walked with us for 71 years as Barbara Julia Haynes Richmond of Hayes, on May 21, 2011 passed through the veil and sees those things of which we can now only dream.

She is now free from the cancer and pain that plagued her earthly body, and joins her Lord, her parents, the Rev. John Wilson Haynes and Grace Eleanor Haggerty Haynes, as well as her sister, Caroline Adelle Haynes Davidson.

Barbara entered this world in Pawtucket, R.I., attending Lincoln School in Providence, R.I. She treasured the friendships she made there her entire life. She graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in Wilmington, Del.

Barbara graduated from Boston School of Pharmacy, in the days when less than five percent of pharmacists were women, and dedicated her assistance as a retail pharmacist in the communities of New Jersey, Tennessee, Delaware, and Virginia, becoming one of the founding members for the Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic, serving as Pharmacist in Charge.

Barbara was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, an active member in the Daughters of The King and the Ware River Circle of The King’s Daughters, and also an accomplished watercolor artist displaying artwork in a number of galleries around the Peninsula.

Survivors include husband and best friend, Thomas Richmond; aunt, Ruth Lund of Cincinnati, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Paul Davidson and wife Myra of Houston, Texas, Henry Richmond of Prescott, Ariz., Hugh Richmond of Wilmington, Del., Joe Richmond of Stuttgart, Germany; adoptive family, George Savage and wife Ellie of Tennessee, Frank Savage and wife Mary Jane of New Hampshire, Diane Peterson of Euclid, Ohio; Linda Martin of Underhill, Vt.; Brenda Savage of Gardena, Cal.; former husband and family friend, Michael O’Brien of Brooklin, Maine, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 31, 2011, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at 11 a.m. in Abingdon Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Alan Coffey and the Rev. Carlton Bakkum. Following the service, family and friends will gather in the parish hall for a reception. Inurnment will be held at 2 p.m. in Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery, Yorktown, conducted by the Reverends Sven vanBaars and Connie Jones.

In Barbara’s memory, should friends desire, contributions may be made to the Gloucester- Mathews Free Clinic, P.O. Box 943, Hayes, Va. 23072.
