ANTHONY MANUEL ORTIZ

Anthony Manuel Ortiz, 83, of Port Haywood, Va., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011.

Tony was born in New York, N.Y., on April 17, 1928, the son of Anthony and Epiphania Ortiz. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Shirley J. Ortiz.

He is survived by his three children, Anna C. Ortiz of Globe, Ariz., Anthony (Joe) J. Ortiz and his wife Linda of Port Haywood, and Daniel T. Ortiz and his wife Anne Ducey-Ortiz of Dutton, Va. He is also survived by his sister, Theresa Hadjopolous and her husband George of St. Augustine, Fla., and Marguerite (Cookie) Ortiz of Sarasota, Fla. He will be missed by his four loving grandchildren, Marya Langford and her husband Michael, Sara Ortiz, Dylan Ortiz, and Emily Ortiz. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Jackson, Bianca, and Maxwell.

Tony graduated in 1950 from the University of Notre Dame and had a long career teaching English, Spanish, and Medieval Literature. He also supervised the lab at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, N.Y. He was an avid reader, loved to learn, and thoroughly enjoyed nature.

In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to either the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad or Mathews County Meals on Wheels. The family greatly appreciates the help of these organizations in the final years of Tony’s life.
