The Gloucester Fair Association is in limbo and has been unable to make any plans for a county fair in 2013. Association member Rachel Burnette said several factors have come together to make it the second time in over 40 years that Gloucester has not planned a county fair.

According to Burnette, due to the combination of association president Bob Thayer’s being in ill health and an overall lack of support from the community, no effort has been made to secure a carnival or proceed with the event.

This summer would have been the 43rd year for the fair under the direction of the Gloucester Fair Association. One year, the fair could not be held because of bad weather and last year, the association was unable to plan a fair for the first time.

Burnette said the GFA is the third organizer of the fair. The first fair in the county was an agricultural fair, organized in 1912. Another group took over in the late 1950s or early 1960s and held the fair for five or six years before it ceased operation.
