The Mathews County Board of Supervisors is expected to discuss a proposed policy for administering FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program in the county during the board’s May meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The board tabled a decision on the matter last month.
Developed by Planning and Zoning Director John Shaw, the proposed policy outlines FEMA’s requirements for participation in the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, establishes a steering committee to oversee administration of the program, and provides guidelines for the committee to follow while administering the program.
In addition, it gives applicants criteria for complying with the terms of the program, establishes local policies designed to prioritize properties for selection, sets an appeals procedure for any difference of opinion about the value of a property, and states that appraisals will be based on the pre-disaster condition of the property.
Finally, it provides guidelines for property owners to salvage materials from a site, outlines the conditions for the acquisition of a property, and establishes a procedure for dispute resolution for a property owner who isn’t satisfied with the elevation of a structure.
