Gloucester, Mathews services to mark legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Services will be held in Mathews and Gloucester on Sunday and Monday to celebrate the legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on what would have been his 84th birthday.

The Mathews chapter of the NAACP will honor the memory of Dr. King at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Zion Baptist Church, Cardinal, while the Gloucester Union Relief Association of Missionary Baptist will hold its ceremony at 4 p.m. Monday at First United Baptist Church, White Marsh.

Guest speaker at the Mathews service will be county native George S. Forrest Sr. of Alpharetta, Ga., and Charlotte, N.C. A retired regional manager for McDonald’s, Forrest is now the owner/operator of several McDonald’s franchises in the Charlotte area. His parents, George W. and Ophelia J. Forrest, reside at Susan.
