The Mathews County Planning Commission will discuss proposed amendments to the junk vehicle ordinance during a meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the historic courthouse on Court Street. There will also be a discussion of oyster aquaculture uses and definitions.
Planning director John Shaw will present the commission with a proposal for an ordinance that would give the planning department the authority to "remove or cause to be removed" inoperable or junk vehicles from yards or other premises. The ordinance would require that the owner be given 14 days’ notice.
The owner would be responsible for paying the cost of a vehicle’s removal and disposal, and a lien could be placed against the property if he or she failed to do so.
The ordinance would not apply to vehicles properly screened by landscape plantings or an opaque wall or fence.
