The Virginia Department of Transportation and Gloucester County will hold a public meeting tonight to seek comments on ways to address congestion and safety concerns along Gloucester’s Main Street corridor.

The meeting will be held from 4:30-7:30 tonight at Botetourt Elementary School. VDOT spokesperson Tina Bundy said the open-house style meeting will include formal presentations at 4:45 and 6:30 p.m.

Bundy said representatives from VDOT and the HNTB Corporation will be available to listen to comments from the public. HNTB is an engineering, architectural and planning firm that specializes in infrastructure projects.

Comments gathered will be used, in conjunction with an analysis of the traffic congestion and its causes, to develop potential solutions which could include other multimodal accommodations such as walking trails or sidewalks and bike lanes, Bundy said Monday.

The study area includes a 2.5-mile long section of Route 17 Business from 17 Bypass South (near entrance to Fox Mill Center) to 17 Bypass North (by Newington Baptist Church). Among some of the major intersections in that zone are Main at John Clayton (Route 14), Roaring Springs Road, Edgehill Shopping Center, Ware House Landing Road and at T.C. Walker Road.
