The Gloucester County Health Department reported its fourth positive rabies case of 2012 recently.

According to senior environmental health specialist David Demuth, the positive rabies case occurred on Aug. 23 when a skunk entered a dog pen during the day and was killed by the two dogs inside. The incident occurred in the Ware Neck area near the intersection of Ditchley Drive and Lightview Lane.

Both dogs were current on their rabies vaccinations, Demuth said Tuesday, and the skunk was tested for the rabies virus and found to be positive.

The dogs are receiving vaccine booster shots, Demuth said, and will be monitored for 45 days.

This was the first positive rabid animal case in Ware Neck this year, he said, with the other documented positive cases being reported in Achilles, Naxera and Glass.
