Bridge rehabilitation work is set to begin on Route 3 over the Piankatank River between Mathews and Middlesex counties.

A $10.9 million contract was awarded by the Commonwealth Transportation Board to Precon Marine, Inc., to repair the John Andrew Twigg Bridge. The project completion date is May 2014.

A citizen information meeting will be held next Wednesday, March 7 at St. Clare Walker Elementary School in Locust Hill.

VDOT project officials will be available at the meeting to answer questions, share project plans, and discuss temporary traffic patterns that will be used to sequence traffic flow during construction. No formal presentation will be given. The public can attend any time between 4-7 p.m.

This project will rehabilitate the two-lane Twigg Bridge, replacing its deck, fenders and superstructure, and repairing portions of the bridge substructure. The existing bridge is structurally deficient, a VDOT release stated.
