The Mathews Volunteer Fire Department elected new officers Monday night, including a new fire chief.

Ricky Tomlinson stepped down from his position as fire chief after 18 years of service to the department and the community. He said the job had been very time-consuming and he was ready for a break.

"Time gets away," said Tomlinson. "I’m gonna lay back and relax."

Todd Wilson was elected as the new fire chief. He has been with the department for many years, serving in various positions. In his professional life, he worked for many years with James City County Fire and Rescue and is currently employed as a firefighter at the oil refinery in Yorktown.

Calvin Morgan, who was reelected to the position of president, said of Wilson, "There’s no question he’ll do a fine job."
