George D. Bains, Gloucester County’s director of information technology, has resigned, effective Nov. 30, to accept a job in Henrico County.
Bains, who has worked for Gloucester since 1988, said he will start his new position Dec. 1 as Henrico County’s assistant director of information technology. The Gloucester resident said he plans to continue residing here, "at least for now," and will commute to his new job.
"It’s exciting," Bains said Wednesday of the opportunity for professional advancement. Bains said Henrico’s information technology department has been frequently recognized by the National Association of Counties and it is a much larger department than Gloucester’s: 83 workers in the Henrico department compared to about a dozen here.
Gloucester County Administrator Brenda Garton said Wednesday that Bains was "an extremely dedicated and hard-working employee," having served the county for 23 years. She said the director of information technology post will be filled, but the job has not yet been advertised.
