The first in a series of candidate forums for Gloucester and Mathews voters will be held tonight in the Mathews Memorial Library, according to Nadine Tatum, co-chair of the Middle Peninsula League of Voters.

So far, groups that have scheduled forums include the Middle Peninsula League of Voters, the Mathews County Woman’s Club, the West Mathews Community League and the Gwynn’s Island Civic League.

In Mathews County, all MidPenVOTE forums will begin at 6 p.m. in Mathews Memorial Library and will include candidates for commissioner of the revenue, commonwealth’s attorney, sheriff, treasurer and Tidewater District Soil & Water Conservation director tonight; candidates for the General Assembly (House of Delegates and Senate of Virginia) next Thursday, Sept. 29, and candidates for board of supervisors and school board on Oct. 10.

In Gloucester, all forums will begin at 6:30 p.m. at T.C. Walker Elementary School and will include candidates for commissioner of revenue, commonwealth’s attorney, school board, sheriff, treasurer and Tidewater District Soil and Water Conservation director on Monday; candidates for board of supervisors on Oct. 3 and candidates for the General Assembly (House of Delegates and Senate of Virginia) on Oct. 24.

All forums are free and open to the public, Tatum said. MidPenVOTE is a non-partisan organization encouraging informed citizen participation in government and does not support any party or candidate, she added.
