A proposal for a bed and breakfast inn on Stutts Creek in Moon was moved forward by the Mathews County Planning Commission Tuesday night after a joint public hearing with the board of supervisors.
The commission voted unanimously to recommend that supervisors approve a request by William H. Metzger for a conditional use permit for the proposed business, Blue Water Haven, LLC, which would offer accommodations for up to six guests.
Supervisor Neena Putt had pointed out earlier that the owner could rent the house out without the need for permits, and commission member Mike Lowe said during the commission’s discussion that such a business would "be no more intrusive than a family with four teenagers."
Metzger, who does not intend to live in the house, said he plans to have the property professionally landscaped and to employ a hostess/housekeeper and a groundskeeper to maintain the site and greet guests.
Planning director John Shaw proposed such conditions as limiting the number of guests to six and the number of days a guest can stay to 14, prohibiting private parties or receptions without a separate permit, and making sure the owner and/or housekeeper would be available for guests to contact during hours of operation.
