Gloucester’s revised sign ordinance will again advance to public hearing, with county supervisors to receive comments for a second time at the board’s Aug. 2 meeting.
The proposal handed down to supervisors by the Gloucester Planning Commission was put on hold following a hearing in June, when a number of county business owners and residents spoke against some of the proposed changes and made recommendations on what they would like to see in the revised ordinance.
On Tuesday, board members heard and discussed comments from a subcommittee comprised of at-large supervisors Louise Theberge and Michelle Ressler, county attorney Ted Wilmot and county administrator Brenda Garton. This committee, charged with working with the ordinance, tried to implement as many of the changes as it saw fit proposed by the business owners in June.
"The rules we implement will not only affect businesses, but residents also," Ressler said. "I agree 100 percent with the business owners, but it’s everybody we represent."
Supervisors went back and forth on the details of several issues for nearly an hour. In the end, some of the major aspects include increasing window signage allowed from 10 percent to 50 percent; the length of time a message can be displayed on an electronic display, and whether balloons with writing on them advertising special events will be allowed.
