Nearly 60 people are expected to participate in Sunday’s 111th Christmas Bird Count, sponsored by the National Audubon Society in Mathews County. The count takes place to help monitor the status of resident and migratory birds.
Joyce McKelvey, coordinator of the Mathews count said her husband Don McKelvey, will meet anyone not looking for owls at 7 a.m. in the Parks and Recreation parking lot, adjacent to Mathews High School.
Participants will count birds throughout the day, and come back together at dusk for the final tally, which will take place this year at Foster-Faulkner Office Complex, 138 Main Street. McKelvey said chili, applesauce and beverages will be provided at the tally.
