A litter cleanup event will be held from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 7, in the Guinea Road area.

Depending on the number of people who volunteer to help, the cleanup may include portions of Guinea Road and into Maryus, said Gloucester Clean Community coordinator William A. Bell.

Bell said this will be the first cleanup in that area to be jointly sponsored by the Abingdon Ruritan Club and Gloucester’s Clean Community Committee. Members of both organizations will participate, and Bell hopes to get at least 50 community members to lend a hand that morning.

Bell said the effort also needs pickup trucks and drivers to haul the litter to a convenience center. Past collections show that each person picks up an average 50 pounds of litter, he added.

Bell said the Abingdon Ruritan Club “came to us” looking for an environmental service project to benefit the community.

The club will also pay for a picnic lunch for everyone who helps that morning, Bell said.
