New Mathews County General Registrar Carla T. Faulkner, right, was sworn in by Angela Ingram, clerk of Mathews County Circuit Court, on Monday.
Mathews native Carla T. Faulkner of Mobjack has been appointed to fill the position of voter registrar for Mathews County. She was sworn in on Monday, replacing Ruth Ann Hutson, who retired on Friday after eight years in the office.
Faulkner has been a part-time employee in the registrar’s office since November. A graduate of Virginia Wesleyan University, she holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She said she spent seven years after graduation working in EVB bank’s corporate offices, where she was a project manager. Her responsibilities were implementing new teller systems and opening new branches, among other things.
After she married and had a baby, Faulkner said she spent a couple of years as a stay-at-home mom before opening The Tiny Crab, a children’s consignment shop on Main Street in Mathews. However, she said she discovered retail was not for her, and when a position in the registrar’s office became available, she put the shop up for sale.
Faulkner said she feels the registrar’s position offers her a chance to do what she was doing when she was at EVB—working on a project with different people while having particular tasks to complete. She said she still has a lot to learn, but Hutson and Sherry Ashe, part-time assistant general registrar, are helping her out.
“I feel I have the best-case scenario,” she said. “I’ll be able to pick their brains.”
Faulkner is married to Curt Faulkner Jr., who works for Dominion Virginia Power. They have one child, Ella Claire, who is 2½ years old.
