Susan resident Barbara Bass received a well-deserved honor recently when she was appointed Honorary Mayor of the 2013 Mathews Market Days festival, which is scheduled Sept. 6-7 in and around the Mathews court green.

Bass has been active on the Mathews Market Days Committee for 31 years. During that time, she has served in just about every capacity possible to make each year’s festival a success.

Her role with Market Days began when she and her sister, Claudia Temple, who now resides in Virginia Beach, opened the Unicorn Gift Shop in Mathews Court House. Shortly after opening the business, Bass said she joined the Mathews County Chamber of Commerce and was asked to be the liaison between the chamber and the Market Days Committee.

As years went by, her participation with the Market Days Committee continued. She had served two years as chair of the committee and said that was "enough." However, she wound up chairing the committee another five years.

This year, Bass is still involved and is the committee’s vice chair and advisor.
