A proposed zoning map amendment for the Village Mixed Use District in Mathews Court House will be the subject of a joint public hearing to be held Tuesday by the Mathews County Planning Commission and the Mathews County Board of Supervisors. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the historic courtroom on Court Street.

The Village Mixed Use District was created by an amendment to the zoning ordinance in January 2012, but the boundaries of the district have not yet been established. The proposed amendment would establish those boundaries.

The amendment proposes including 86.29 acres that are concentrated around "areas of public investment by the county," according to the staff report on the matter. This includes the areas covered by the Main Street Enhancement Grant, the Community Development Block Grant, and the VDOT Main Street Drainage Improvement Project.

The proposed area includes both sides of Routes 14/198 from Stewart’s Tile and Liberty Square southeast to Town Center and several parcels across the road from Town Center that are currently residential in nature. It also includes both sides of Main Street from Hyco Corner south to the Kingston Episcopal Parish House and the Brambles, as well as properties on both sides of Church Street from Main Street to the White Dog Bistro and Station 1 of the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department.
