5 Gloucester sites IDed for renewable energy potential

Five sand and gravel pits in Gloucester have been identified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as potential sites for developing renewable energy. A sixth site, the Middle Peninsula Landfill, was listed in the online dataset for the EPA’s Re-Powering America’s Land Initiative for its methane outreach program.

Two of the sites with renewable energy potential are located off Marlfield Road in upper Gloucester, one is off Hickory Fork Road in central Gloucester, and two are in Gloucester Point, on Camp Okee Drive and Sherwood Drive, according to the EPA’s Re-Powering Mapping and Screening Tool. The tool can be found online at www.epa.gov/renewableenergyland following links to rd_mapping_tool.htm.

The five local sites listed have potential for solar photovoltaic systems, according to the map, while the two Gloucester Point sites are additionally listed as having potential for wind power. The only site listed as having more than an acre of land is the one on Camp Okee Drive, which has six acres.

Each of the five sites could support an off-grid system. According to an EPA brochure, off-grid systems are smaller-scale projects that typically power the energy needs of a single property when interconnection to the grid may not be feasible.
