A Mathews woman died early Monday morning after her vehicle struck a front-end loader that was in the roadway on East River Road in the county.

McKennah Evelyn Moore, 20, of Moon was traveling northbound on East River Road when the 2001 Saturn sedan she was driving struck a John Deere 444E front loader, which was partially in the northbound lane, according to Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

Anaya said Moore died at the scene of the accident that occurred at about 2:15 a.m. in the 1800 block. She said the loader had been operated by Carlos Vicente of Cardinal, who was towing a disabled vehicle in the southbound lane and had stopped to make adjustments to it. She said the loader was angled and partially in the northbound lane with no lights illuminated when it was struck by Moore’s vehicle.

Vicente, 34, was not injured in the crash. Anaya said he was charged with improper stopping, improper towing and no valid driver’s license. Moore, the sole occupant of her vehicle, was wearing her safety belt, Anaya said, and alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

The accident was investigated by trooper Bryan Wintermantel. East River Road was closed until about 5:30 a.m. Monday while a VSP accident reconstruction team assisted the investigation.

This was the second traffic fatality of 2013 in Mathews County.
