Marvin Crane will be honored as grand marshal of the Guinea Jubilee this weekend. Crane, 76, has held many jobs during his working career, but is probably best known as owner of the Achilles Shopping Center.

Crane began his life as a carpenter, and was then a Hampton City police officer and a 7-Eleven store supervisor.

He bought Otis Hogge’s store at Achilles in November 1976, beginning many years of service to the Guinea community. Together, Hogge and Crane formed a corporation named Otis Hogge, Inc., and gave the Achilles store its name today.

Crane said he ran the store for 22 years, becoming well-liked and a vital part of the Guinea landscape.

His store was and still is not just a place to grab some groceries or a bite to eat. Crane carried on the tradition of Guineamen meeting at the store, discussing everything from the price of crabs to politics and hunting.
