Mathews High School and the Gloucester Point Beach will be the hot spots for Independence Day fireworks tonight.

Mathews Fireworks Committee spokesman Charles Ingram said this year’s show "will be just as good of a show as last year." The overall display will remain the same; however, a few minor changes and additions will be possible.

Spectators of the Mathews fireworks display will have their best view of the show from Mathews High School. Ingram said the start time of the fireworks always depends on lighting and weather conditions, but it will likely be somewhere between 9 and 9:15 p.m.

Ingram stressed that the fireworks display would not be possible without the support of Mathews County residents and businesses. "The people in Mathews are wonderful to support us in what we do," he said, "and I think the reason is that we give them a good show."

He said people from all over the area have attended past fireworks shows in Mathews. "We get people from just about everywhere," saying that one couple he spoke with travels from Virginia Beach because they said the fireworks in Mathews are better than those launched in downtown Norfolk.
