The 2013 Mathews Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society will be held from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday at the track at Mathews High School.
The Relay begins with dinner for cancer survivors and their caregivers trackside at 6 p.m. Friday. The opening ceremonies follow and there will be hamburgers, hot dogs and barbecue available for purchase. There will also be a silent auction, cornhole and other games for all ages.
At 10:30 Friday night a special lap around the track will honor the memory of Deanna Haywood, the Mathews teen who died in a car crash in April. Haywood had been part of the Mathews Relay for the past five years. Luminaries may be purchased in her memory.
Special purple silk luminaries will be available in addition to the traditional white luminary bags that represent those lost to cancer and cancer survivors. Luminaries can be purchased onsite until 8:30 p.m. and the luminary ceremony begins at 9.
