A Hayes woman was charged with attempted capital murder after Gloucester Sheriff’s Office investigators found a young girl “extremely malnourished and suffering from severe starvation” inside a mobile home in the 8100 block of Carrie Lane in Hayes on Thursday, according to Chief Investigator Scott Little.

Little said investigators revisited the Carrie Lane residence Friday afternoon and uncovered the buried remains of what appears to be a young child inside a shed on the property.

Little said Shannon Gore, 25, of the Carrie Lane address was charged with attempted capital murder and felony child abuse in connection with the child’s condition. He said her husband, Brian Gore, age 29 of the same address, was also charged with felony child abuse.

Investigators initially went to the residence around 7:45 a.m. Thursday to serve a search warrant in relation to a burglary case, according to Little. He said they then discovered the young girl, who appeared to be five or six years old, imprisoned and apparently starving in a modified crib covered with a piece of wood. Little said the girl was nude and covered in feces, and it was determined that she was left alone and unattended in the crib for extended periods of time.

Little said the child was taken by ambulance to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital and then transported to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk where she is in guarded condition. He said a one-month-old baby boy was also removed from the Gores’ mobile home and placed in protective care.

After obtaining further information, Little said the investigators returned to the property on Friday and found the buried remains. He said additional charges are pending a report on the remains from the state medical examiner’s office. Little said six GSO detectives and several patrol officers, along with the Gloucester Department of Social Services, have assisted with the investigation, which is ongoing.
