Wetlands board to consider wharf project at Jan. 8 meeting

The Mathews County Wetlands Board will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, on an application for a permit for extensive construction that will impact wetlands at Williams Wharf Landing. The meeting will be held in the historic courtroom on Court Street.

The Mathews Land Conservancy is asking the board to grant it permission to build a structure out from the northern shoreline and over top of 5,361.25 square feet of vegetated and non-vegetated wetlands. The proposed building would have a fixed dock extending from beneath it that would cover 1,580.56 square feet of vegetated wetlands and would connect to two parallel 80-foot by 16-foot floating piers.

Four existing piers would be removed to allow for construction—two on the northern shoreline and two that are west of them. The proposal includes replacing the two westward piers with a larger 62-foot pier with a 100-foot by 14-foot T-head.

A pier on the southern shoreline would be extended 54 feet. The proposed project also includes 228 linear feet of bulkhead with 182 linear feet of riprap revetment in front of it and 150 cubic yards of fill placed landward of the bulkhead.

To view the application, visit the wetlands office in the county administration building on Brickbat Road or go online to http://ccrm.vims.edu/perms/newpermits.html.

Also under consideration is an application by John Dixon of Gwynn, for a permit to install approximately 19 feet of riprap and associated fill along the Keeble Creek shoreline at 168 Gatten Road, Gwynn.
