Warren defeats Ledbetter in GOP primary; Allen wins party’s nod

Meanwhile, former governor and U.S. Senator George Allen came ahead in the GOP race for the Senate seat he held from 2001 to 2007. Allen’s successor in the Senate, Jim Webb, is not seeking reelection. Allen will face Democrat Tim Kaine in the November general election.
"The results of Tuesday’s primary election were remarkable and suggest to me that the community is pleased with my performance and platform as their sheriff since February," Warren said. "I want to thank my family for their unwavering commitment and support in this endeavor. I also recognize that the results (of Tuesday) were a direct reflection of all the hard work, support and commitment of the men and women in your sheriff’s office. I have been humbled throughout this process; my staff and I remain focused and committed to providing the level of service the citizens and business owners of Gloucester County deserve."
Ledbetter could not be reached for comment prior to press time.
Voter registrars in both counties were pleased with the number of voters who turned up at the polls Tuesday.
Gloucester’s voter registrar Bobbi Morgan said 4,137 out of 25,565 registered voters cast their ballots Tuesday. "Compared to the 4.915 percent overall state turnout, Gloucester County hit 16.18 percent," Morgan said. "Turnout was wonderful. I am very grateful to the voters of Gloucester County."
