Volunteers help prepare grounds of Woodville Park
Approximately 50 people turned out for the first Community Work Day Saturday at Woodville Park, located off Brays Point Road, Ordinary.
Carol Steele, Gloucester’s director of parks, recreation and tourism, said Tuesday that the event was so successful that she hopes to schedule regular community work days at the park, perhaps once a month, throughout 2012. Although individuals and groups had worked at the park, now under construction, in recent years, Steele said, there had never been a comprehensive, communitywide work day planned there.
A number of groups were represented Saturday, including Gloucester Master Gardeners, Park Partners, The Home Depot, The Giving Garden, Baystars Soccer, Gloucester Point Rotary Club, as well as several local Boy Scouts.
Some of the volunteers worked on a boardwalk being built through a memorial garden that’s taking shape, while others helped clear a sports field and others worked on several other garden projects.
"They got a lot done," Steele said.
