VDOT to hold meeting tonight on Fox Mill bridge replacement

A meeting will be held from 5-7 o’clock tonight at the Gloucester Library at Main Street Center so that Virginia Department of Transportation officials can discuss plans to replace the nearby bridge over Fox Mill Run on southbound Route 17 Business (Main Street). The public is encouraged to attend, a release said.

Replacement of the bridge will probably begin in October, according to VDOT spokesman Kelly Hannon, and the new bridge should be completed about 12 months later.

While the new bridge is being built to replace what Hannon termed "a functionally obsolete bridge," both southbound lanes of Route 17 Business must be closed to traffic at the present location. Hannon said that VDOT has come up with a plan for northbound and southbound traffic on Route 17 Business to share the two-lane northbound bridge during construction.

Route 17 Business will narrow to one lane in each direction approximately 500 feet north of Fox Mill Run, and will return to two lanes for each direction approximately 600 feet south of Fox Mill Run.

A contract is to be awarded for the project within the next few weeks, Hannon said Tuesday.
