Proposed plans for improving stormwater drainage in Mathews Court House will be discussed at a public meeting from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Thomas Hunter Middle School.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will have representatives on hand to explain the work to be done, discuss how traffic will be handled during construction, and answer questions, said Joyce McGowan, assistant residency administrator at Saluda. Construction drawings will be available for residents to examine. Mathews County staff will attend, as well.

McGowan said the plans call for replacing existing storm sewer and culvert systems in three locations—on Buckley Hall Road at Hyco Corner, on Main Street in front of Food Lion, and on Church Street at Mathews Volunteer Fire Department Station 1. The project is projected to cost $3,124,180.

The first replacement structure will consist of four 5’ wide x 3’ deep box culverts installed under Buckley Hall Road from a location between Chesapeake Bank and the car wash on the north side to a location between Deb’s Haircuts and Hyco Market on the south side. The culverts will be in line with the flow of an outfall ditch that joins with the headwaters of Put-In Creek.

A second structure will consist of three 38" wide by 24" deep elliptical pipes that will begin at an existing drainage structure in the Food Lion parking lot, run under Main Street and the parking lot between Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home and Mathews Insurance Agency, and join a ditch that empties into Put-In Creek.
