Varner appointed director of Gloucester Information Technology
Allen Scott Varner was recently promoted to serve as Gloucester’s director of Information Technology. Varner, who most recently served as applications integration coordinator for the county, officially began his new role on Monday.
According to county spokesperson Christi Lewis, Varner was selected following an applicant review and interview process utilizing a committee which included information technology professionals from other localities, as well as county staff.
"I am extremely excited about the opportunity to lead such a dynamic team," Varner said. "My wife and I moved to Gloucester in 1999 from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and decided to make Gloucester our home. I believe in this community and am honored at the opportunity to be part of the process to improve things not only for the citizens, but county staff as well. Technology moves at a rapid pace and I, along with our outstanding team, plan to leverage technology where appropriate while being a good steward of tax payer dollars."
Varner has worked for Gloucester County since 2001, Lewis said. He is a former naval cryptologist and is a graduate of the Defense Information Schools.
