Tugboat named for Mathews native
Bobby Hudgins, Ambrose’s nephew, and his wife, Phyllis Hudgins, were among the guests at the Capt. Ambrose christening on April 27. Held behind the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center in Newport News, the ceremony was overseen by another Mathews native, Danny Hunley, the shipyard’s vice president of operations.
"Wednesday was a wonderful day for both Mathews County and our family," said Phyllis Hudgins.
Hunley presented Bobby Hudgins, who is also a shipyard retiree, with a framed flag to commemorate the christening. In accepting the flag, Hudgins said that "Uncle Marvin would be so thrilled, humbled and honored by this day."
Shirley Langston, the shipyard’s longest-serving female master shipbuilder, who has worked for the Newport News shipyard for 53 years, christened the boat. She was introduced by Matt Mulherin, president of Newport News Shipbuilding.
