Treatment plant to picnic area; supervisors view possible plans

A drawing by design and engineering firm Vanasse Hangen Brustlin depicts a possible development plan for the HRSD property on Put-In Creek in Mathews once the sewage treatment plant is removed.
County administrator Steve Whiteway explained that the design is conceptual only, and he noted that changes have already been suggested. The design calls for a boardwalk along the marshland, leading to a dock for launching kayaks into the creek. A pavilion for picnics and benches along the marsh-front walkway would provide residents with a place to rest and look out over the water.
Whiteway said the county has asked the Hampton Roads Sanitation District not to demolish the concrete pads under the treatment tanks until the final plan is approved by the supervisors. This gives the board the option of placing the picnic pavilion or a similar structure there.
Whiteway said the design is "just something to start thinking about" and that the most important thing is to "beautify the site and provide access to the water."
Village mixed use
The board voted 4-1, supervisor Neena Putt dissenting, to approve a zoning text amendment that would allow for the creation of a village mixed use district in the court house area.
