The Gloucester Creek Cleanup, part of the regional Clean the Bay Day, will be held from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday.

Scott Rae, Gloucester’s environmental programs administrator, said that this year volunteers are being recruited to clean portions of three waterways in the county: Sarah’s Creek, Severn River and Perrin River. Last year, about 80 volunteers picked up 2½ tons of trash during the cleanup, which has been held for about 20 years.

But Rae expects bigger results from the community this year, hoping that at least 100 people will volunteer to pick up trash from the waterways. Also, Rae said he expects lots of debris in the waterways because of a number of severe storms that have struck the region during the past few years.

Besides manpower, Rae said he needs people to step up to volunteer their boats, canoes and even kayaks that morning to transport the volunteers into the water to collect debris. Rae said that 10 boats per waterway should be adequate to transport volunteers.
