Although the unofficial end to summer has come and gone, that doesn’t mean that it’s an end to the summer fun as the 39th annual Mathews Market Days comes to Mathews Court House on Friday and Saturday.

More than 90 vendors and thousands of guests are expected to take part in this year’s festival, which has been dubbed "The Showcase of a Creative Community."

Vendors this year will display a wide variety of items ranging from wooden bird and fish carvings to handwoven items, glass art, children’s toys, jewelry, homemade baked goods and much more, according to Market Days publicity chair Trudy Flippin.

"This is a town event," she said, noting that the festival takes the cooperation and patience of all local merchants and residents. "We hope this will also help the revenue of local businesses."

For visitors trying to get in and out of the festival, Flippin said shuttle bus transportation will be available Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at no cost. Picking visitors up at Lee-Jackson/Thomas Hunter Middle School and at Mathews High School, it will stop at the corner of Court and Church streets. There will be a designated area for handicap loading and unloading.

Motorists, she said, should also be advised that several streets in the Court House area will be closed to traffic beginning Thursday and continuing until Sunday at 5 p.m.
