An attempt to serve two arrest warrants Friday morning resulted in a standoff with Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office deputies and members of the Virginia State Police at a home in the 8000 block of John Clayton Memorial Highway in Gloucester, according to a release from Maj. D.W. Warren of the sheriff’s office.

The incident disrupted traffic along Route 14 for several hours.

At approximately 10:40 a.m., deputies attempted to serve two arrest warrants that had been issued from Mathews County on a subject believed to be at the Route 14 residence.

The subject, Samuel Warren Thompson, was seen at this residence by deputies attempting to serve the arrest warrant. The subject then fled into the residence and responding deputies attempted to secure the perimeter while awaiting other units. Several attempts were made to have the subject come out of the residence without success.

The Gloucester County Sheriff's Office Special Operations Unit was deployed to assist in apprehending the fugitive. Additional assistance was provided by Virginia State Police troopers and K-9 unit who assisted with the operation, as well Virginia Department of Transportation personnel who diverted traffic away from the scene.

Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue were also on standby, however no injuries were reported during the incident.

After several hours of attempting to negotiate with Thompson, the Special Operations Unit made entry into the residence and found one subject at the residence, but deputies did not locate Thompson.

Thompson is still at large and is wanted by the Mathews County Sheriff's Office on felony charges of abduction and kidnapping, and a misdemeanor warrant for assault and battery of a family or household member.

Samuel Warren Thompson is a 25-year-old white male approximately 5’6” tall, weighing 160 pounds with short brown hair and hazel eyes.
