Members of the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors, meeting Tuesday night in the colonial courthouse, were provided with several options of how to deal with the massive amounts of debris spread across areas of the county left by Saturday evening’s tornado.

Garrey Curry, Gloucester’s director of public works, presented the options and, in the end, supervisors voted to move ahead with a May 3 public hearing to waive certain permit fees pertaining to the tornado cleanup. The fees are related to building permits, erosion/sediment control, processing, the Clean Bay Act, and burning.

Curry reported that the Virginia Department of Transportation will have all state rights-of-way in the county cleared of debris by Friday. However, he said if debris is placed at a right-of-way again, VDOT will not revisit the site.

With no federal money yet promised, the county is likely to have to incur most of the costs, at least the upfront expenses, of debris removal.
