Supervisors allocate $2.3M for Walker

After months of debate, Gloucester County School administration will be moving its offices to the Thomas Calhoun Walker Education Center by the end of this calendar year.

The Gloucester County Board of Supervisors voted 4-3 Tuesday night during its meeting in the colonial courthouse to allocate $2.3 million of the county’s capital improvement fund to prepare the school for administrative offices and make much needed improvements to the building to preserve it for future use. Supervisors JJ Orth (Abingdon), Ashley Chriscoe (at-large) and Andy James (Ware) voted against allocating the funds.

Supervisors voted last month to send a letter to the school board notifying it that the county will need the space, currently occupied by school administration, for its own employees beginning next year.

The vote follows a lack of decision by the school board a week prior on how much money it wanted to request from the board of supervisors to allocate for renovating T.C. Walker. Supervisors had requested that the school board bid out the work so that school administration could move into that facility, freeing Building 2 for county departments.

The school board ended up voting Feb. 26 to request $2.6 million from county supervisors to perform the work.

The bids came back to the school board on Feb. 12 at just over $3.6 million to do the first phases of work on T.C. Walker.
