Monday will mark one year since Gloucester, Mathews and other surrounding communities were shattered by an EF-3 tornado that cut a swath of destruction from the Coke area of Gloucester through Ware Neck, to North in Mathews, and finally to Deltaville in Middlesex County.

The April 16, 2011 tornado left two dead, nearly a dozen homes destroyed and over 200 others damaged.

The storm severely damaged Page Middle School, causing the school system to initiate an emergency contingency plan, sending Page students to Peasley Middle School to finish out the 2011 school year.

Since that time, the damaged section of Page has been cleared from the property and the school board recently voted to demolish the remaining structure of the school. The future for Page students remains uncertain.

The Gazette-Journal recently caught up with several families who were victims of the tornado. Most have rebuilt, but each one will continue with the memories of that fateful day for years to come along with the overwhelming support members of the community showed them in their time of need.
