Senior housing plans discussed at Mathews planning meeting
The Mathews County Planning and Zoning Department and the Planning Commission held the meeting in order to get the opinions of stakeholders on the matter. A map of the proposed district, which would provide options for development of a mix of residential and business uses, includes the parcels on the south side of Buckley Hall Road from the ABC store to the Dollar General store and the parcels along both sides of Main Street from Buckley Hall Road south to Vintage Gallery and The Brambles.
Planning and Zoning Director John Shaw said a VMU district is not a new concept, having been discussed as far back as 1982, when the idea was included in the comprehensive plan. He said that the village in fact already has mixed uses, but because it’s zoned B-2, a conditional use permit is required for many things that would be by-right development in the VMU district.
Out of the nearly 50 properties that might be included in the district as proposed, the only property owners or stakeholders who came to the meeting were Steve Whiteway, representing Mathews Memorial Library; Allen Moughon, owner of Moughons hardware store; and Mary Digges, owner of a residential property on Buckley Hall Road.
