Schools set to open Tuesday in Gloucester, Mathews

Neither division experienced significant damage from Hurricane Irene. "We were very fortunate, very, very fortunate," Gloucester County Public Schools’ assistant superintendent John Hutchinson said Tuesday, when all campuses were fully staffed and readying to welcome students and parents to open house events.
The storm knocked out power to Gloucester’s northernmost schools, Hutchinson said, but electricity was restored to Petsworth and Botetourt on Monday and to Bethel and Peasley on Tuesday.
Teachers had an unscheduled day off on Monday while groundskeepers went to work cleaning up a scattering of branches and other storm debris. "Jimmy (Viars) and his crew did a great job of getting the grounds cleaned up," Hutchinson said of the school division’s grounds manager and his workers.
