Rezoning sought for Gloucester Point property

The Gloucester County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing next Thursday, July 5 on a proposal to rezone property at Gloucester Point to develop residential lots.

The hearing will begin at 7:45 p.m. in the colonial courthouse, with the meeting to start at 7:30.

Chairman Natalie Q. Johnson said the commission has received an application by Southern Bank and Trust Company (owner) and Reese Smith Associates (contract purchaser) to amend the Gloucester County Zoning map to reclassify 11.09 acres. The property is located in the Gloucester Point Magisterial District on the west side of Route 17, directly across from the Gloucester Point Shopping Center.

The principal purposes of the application are to remove the 55-or-older age restriction contained in the previous rezoning application approved by the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors in January 2005, a county notice said, and to allow for the construction of duplexes rather than condominiums on the property, which is zoned MF-1 (multifamily).

The applicant also seeks approval of modifications to various aspects of the development which were previously approved as accepted proffers in the prior rezoning.

Johnson said the applicant is proposing to develop 50 residential lots with 25 duplex units and several common areas.
