Recent rains hinder mosquito control efforts

"Apparently they are around and we’re after them," Jim Diggs said of the many mosquitoes still being counted in Gloucester.
Diggs, the county’s buildings and grounds director who heads up its mosquito control program, said Oct. 26 that recent rains have hindered efforts to spray in the mosquito control zones. There have been several trouble spots, with lots of the biting pests, he said.
"As usual, most (mosquitoes) are in the saltwater marshes," Diggs said, such as in sections of Guinea in the southern end of the county.
As weather permits (rain and wind hinder the mosquito spraying), county crews drive trucks with units on the rear that shoot a fog of Biomist into the air that kills adult mosquitoes. Diggs said crews usually spray five nights a week, as mosquito counts warrant and if the weather cooperates, with two trucks used and a total of four part-time drivers rotating assignments.
