Put-In Creek Committee to meet today

The Put-In Creek Committee in Mathews will meet at 1 p.m. today in the historic courthouse to hear a presentation by the Army Corps of Engineers. The meeting is open to the public.

The committee was initially appointed to come up with a plan for dredging Put-In Creek and creating a boat turning basin and dock system at the site, which is in Mathews Court House on property currently being used for a sewage treatment facility. That facility will be dismantled when the Hampton Roads Sanitation Division completes the pipeline now under construction from Mathews Court House to Gloucester that will connect to the treatment facility in York County.

But when the Army Corps of Engineers announced that it would be difficult and expensive to obtain the permits for the project, the Mathews Board of Supervisors decided to put the project on the back burner and instead focus on creating a public park or other public facility at the site and consider accommodating transient boaters in some way at Town Point Landing. The Put-In Creek Committee was disbanded, then re-appointed with the new mission.

However, since then the Army Corps has been charged once again with studying the possibilities at Put-In Creek and will explain its new task to the committee at the meeting.

For more information, call Mathews County Administrator Steve Whiteway at 725-7172.
