The Gloucester Planning Commission held a work session Thursday night in the colonial courthouse about whether to allow more temporary signs in the county.

After much discussion, the commission voted 11-1, Buddy Rogers opposed, to pass an interim measure endorsing the general concept of allowing temporary signs for businesses in the county.

However, the commission has not taken a final vote on the specifics of how many temporary signs will be allowed for each business, or how many days per year a business could post such signs.

Part of the discussion centered on allowing temporary signs for business use in the B-1 (Business), B-3 (Office Business) and B-4 (Rural Business) districts. Gloucester Court House is in the B-2 (Village Business) district.

Planning director Anne Ducey-Ortiz said planning staff will bring a revised draft sign ordinance for the commission to review at its next meeting on Jan. 6.

The Gloucester Board of Supervisors will hold its own hearing on the matter to deliberate whether to allow temporary signs for businesses here.
