The National Park Service has notified York County that it will not allow fireworks to be shot from Colonial National Historical Park or its fields used for parking in conjunction with the county’s July 4 festivities.

York County public information officer Christie Powell said on Monday that county officials have not decided what alternate measures may be taken to keep a fireworks display at Yorktown for the Independence Day holiday. Powell said the York Board of Supervisors is dealing with the new county budget right now and has not yet addressed July 4 plans.

Meanwhile, Gloucester County officials are holding off arranging their own July 4 celebration at Gloucester Point Beach—a prime viewing spot for the Yorktown fireworks—until they learn more about what York is doing for Independence Day, said parks, recreation and tourism director Carol Steele.

Steele said she recently sent a memorandum to the Gloucester supervisors suggesting that York could return to shooting fireworks from a barge in the York River, as it once did, instead of lighting them from the National Park Service’s Colonial National Historical Park grounds.
