MPPDC sets regional grant priorities for 2012

The Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission set its 2012 regional priority list for types of projects that might be sought this year for Community Development Block Grant funds.

During a meeting Feb. 22 at its headquarters in Saluda, the commission used a computerized tracking system to rank its top three, middle three, and bottom three priority types of grants that could be sought. The top three are comprehensive community development, community facility, and economic development—business district revitalization. Mathews County already is seeking assistance with revitalizing its business district, acting executive director Lewis Lawrence said.

The middle three topics were economic development—job creation and retention, economic development—business readiness, and housing rehabilitation programs. The bottom rung of project types included economic development—site redevelopment, housing production assistance, and community service facility.

In other business, Lawrence presented a report about the working waterfront project. MPPDC is working on this project with Virginia’s seven other coastal planning district commissions, he said, as well as the Eastern Shore PDC and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
